What’s Next? Thick Framed Glasses and Skinny Jeans?

I said I would never do it. I would never own an iPhone. Not because I didn’t think it was cool tech, but I just didn’t want to be another iPhone drone. That, and I passionately support open standards. Proprietary power connections, iTunes software, having to buy a Mac to develop for it, etc.

But after two Androids (Samsung Charge and Motorola RAZR), I decided to take the leap. Mostly because in both cases (and with my wife’s multiple Droid 4s), the Droids just seem to go wonky after a couple years. Maybe its the device, maybe its an app or maybe its system updates. Don’t know. Don’t care. Got tired of the sticky virtual keyboard trying to predict my next keystroke and having an actual stroke in the process.

So I switched. And I must say, I’m shocked how happy I am with it. I do still have my complaints, namely:

  • No SD card. Really? Why!!????
  • The latter is made worse by calling a 13Gb phone with only 9Gb remaining on purchase a 16Gb phone.
  • Non-standard charging port, although I do like Apple’s better than the fragile mini-USB.
  • I have to buy a Mac if I want to write an App? Really? That sucks.
  • I have to install iTunes if I want to put my Music on it? Really? That sucks.

I could probably go on with a few others, but that would give you the impression I’m unhappy. Well I’m not! To my surprise, all of the above are tolerable given I now have a phone that “just works.” I can’t say what it is, but it feels so well thought out, so well put together and so reliable. It is, of course, intuitive and responsive.

I wish I could quantify the pros, but most would end up just being things you could do on the Android too. What would be lost is how it feels. The subjective side. Sure, it doesn’t do anything the Android can’t do. It just seems to do so many things better.

That, at least, is how I feel now. We’ll see in a year. And hopefully in that time, I don’t start wearing skinny jeans or hipster glasses. Because the world does not need to see that!
