Every now and then I decide to wander off the Ubuntu reservation and look at other distros. Christmas is my favorite time to do this. I decided to give Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon a try. I tried MATE about 2 months ago and liked it well enough, but still found I missed Ubuntu.
With Cinnamon, however, not so much. I’m REALLY liking it. I’ll probably stick with it through April and really kick the tires. There are plenty of screenshot reviews, so don’t come looking for one of those here. But I do plan to share what worked and what didn’t.
Until then, Merry Christmas!!
UPDATE:
I like the overall level of customization. There are options everywhere I look and I love that. The fit and fitness is awesome too. Just a very tight feel.
Multi-monitor support could be better. In Ubuntu, I could replicate my launcher on all displays and even had indicators showing me the count of windows on that display and overall. So far haven’t found anything like that. Minor though.
UPDATE:
My first real issue. My laptop won’t suspend if I close the lid while at the MDM login prompt. Once logged in, it suspends and resumes properly, but not while sitting on MDM. Apparently, it’s a bug.
UPDATE 2013-12-30:
Still loving it. But now there is another issue: battery life seems miserable compared to what I was getting with Ubuntu. I have a Thinkpad T430 with the 9-cell battery. Prior to installing Mint, I could expect 9-11 hours of battery with the Bumblebee drivers. Now it seems to be down 4-6. I have the bumblebee drivers installed, but I’m not confident they are working in the power saving profile. Another item to dig into.
